My personal opinions of the show aside (it was definitely not worthy of that all-out Times rave, in my opinion), I really, really think the chances are slim to none that it would make a profit on Broadway. I wish a sold-out, extended, well-received off Broadway run would be enough for a show like DETROIT. Nowadays, it seems like if any off Broadway show gets respectable reviews, it automatically transfers.
That being said, I absolutely would not be surprised if it did come to Broadway. I believe someone posted on here a few weeks ago saying a cast member confirmed it at the stage door, or something of the sort.
WIth folks like Amy Ryan and David schwimmer in the cast it'll make a profit, and i was the one who was told at the stage door that the plan is to transfer in the spring
I don't think many people know who Amy Ryan is (sadly). And David Schwimmer, while a recognizable name, isn't going to be the sole reason this show recoups. Schwimmer appeared in CAINE MUTINY COURT MARTIAL a few years ago, and that ran 17 performances before closing. If it does make a profit on Broadway, it will be because of strong word of mouth. As good as they both are in the show, Ryan is a one-time Oscar nominee for a film that most people didn't see (again, sadly). And Schwimmer is a B list TV actor from, yes, a phenomenon of a show. But it ended ten years ago and I really don't think many FRIENDS fans are going to be rushing to see him, particularly in a show like DETROIT. He's a "name," but he's certainly not George Clooney or even Hugh Jackman.
I saw Detroit this afternoon and asked folks at Playwrights about this, and they said it hadn't been decided yet. Like Wicked, I too thought it was good, but not deserving of the raves some critics gave it...now The Whale, which I saw tonight, was way better and just terrific, but I'll post about that on another thread. Hard to imagine either of these doing well on B'way, as much as I loved The Whale.
Nobody's pointed out yet that the original plan, after its premiere at Steppenwolf in Chicago, was to bring "Detroit" to New York on Broadway, not Off-Broadway. January 11, 2011 BWW article: "Detroit will be presented on Broadway by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Debbie Bisno, in association with Steppenwolf Theatre Company" I'm not sure why that plan was derailed. Money, probably.
If audience response means anything, the audience that I saw this with hated it. Can't imagine that word of mouth would sell tickets for this overhyped play. And I bought a subscription to PH just to see this...
